Based on an island not far from Hong Kong. Well connected to HK via regular ferry service.
Interesting mix of old Portuguese architecture and present-day Chinese culture.
Most well known for casinos – Venetian is the biggest casino is the world. Baccarat is the most popular board game with hundreds of tables. I found some Blackjack tables, but the minimums were way too high for my wallet – US$25 (HKD200). One floor manager told me that the minimums go up to US$40(HKD300) in the evening/night. Wow! In spite of this being the biggest casino in the world, and in spite of it being a Tuesday afternoon, every single table was occupied, with some of the lower limit tables had people waiting 2 to 3 deep. Every restaurant looked full, every bench had people sitting on them. I even saw tens of people just resting on the floor. It’s easy to see why Macau is number 1 when it comes to gambling revenue (Las Vegas has slipped to number 2). You can really see China’s economic might when you visit Macau casinos. China has a MASSIVE population and a HUGE middle class that has money to spend. And with gambling officially illegal in mainland China, Macau offers a place close enough where the Chinese populace can go to spend their disposable monies.
The historical places are not very easy to find. The places are not well marked, even street names are hard to find even if you have a map.
