Milford Sound

Notes

  • You can drive to Milford Sound yourself from Queenstown if you feel comfortable driving on the left side of the road – that’s what I would do if I went there again. The road is not bad and there are plenty of excellent viewpoints to stop at along the way. You just have to plan your day – it can be a long 12-hour day, unless you spend 1 night in Te Anau before heading back to Queenstown.
  • We took a tour bus from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back – there are tens of tour companies in Queenstown. No need to pre-book. Just look at the weather and make the reservation on the morning of the day-before
  • Milford Sound is extremely hyped up (“most beautiful place on earth”) but I came away un-impressed. It’s alright – but I dint think it was great.
  • When in Milford Sound, you have to take a cruise. Ours was pre-booked as part of the coach-cruise-coach package, but if you drive yourself, you can just book a cruise when you get there. There are 3 or 4 companies that operate there, and the boast all leave from the same place.
