I once spent a year in Philadelphia, I think it was on a Sunday.
– W.C. Fields
See/Do
- (10/10) Barnes Foundation – (GREAT collection of paintings by Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani, Degas, Van Gogh). This is the single largest collection of Renoirs in the world – more than the Louvre in Paris. (2 hours)
- (10/10) Philadelphia Museum of Art (3 hours)
- (2/10) Franklin Institute – good for kids – skip if you aren’t a kid / don’t have a kid
- (8/10) Liberty Bell – gotta do this when you visit Philadelphia for the first time (1 hour)
- (8/10) City Hall Tower – timed/dated reservation required.
- (6/10) Elfreth’s Alley – America’s oldest residential street
- (5/10) United States Mint (good for kids) (1 hour)
- (6/10) One Liberty Observation Deck – Good views of Philly from the 883 ft (269 m) high observation deck located on the 57th floor of One Liberty Place – go around sunset (1 hour)
- (8/10) Reading Terminal Market – indoor market with street food restaurants, gift shops, produce. Think Toronto’s St Lawrence Market or Seattle’s Pike’s Place Market or Budapest’s Great Indoor Market Hall. It’s busy and loud – good to try some street food when the weather is bad outside. Otherwise I would stay clear
- (7/10) Rodin Museum – small museum – hosts the largest collection of sculptor Auguste Rodin’s works outside Paris. Go if you are really a fan of Rodin (1 hour)
- (8/10) Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul
- (5/10) National Constitution Center – Meh
- (2/10) Wanamaker organ inside the Macy’s (Wanamaker Building) – Meh – Look for the giant Eagle sculpture in the middle of the Macy’s. The Eagle faces the Wanamaker organ.
Eat
- MUST Try a Philly Cheesesteak – many good options: Tony Luke’s, Steve’s Prince, Jim’s, etc
- (8/10) Parc Brasserie – good food, good ambience
- (7/10) Moshulu – good food, good ambience – the restaurant is on a ship
- (7/10) Tinto – good food, good ambience
- (3/10) Barbuzzo – bad food, bad ambience
- Assembly Rooftop lounge – great view of Logan Square and Benjamin Franklin Parkway (and museums)
